Comrade Nathaniel Adams

Who was born the (blank) day of (blank) A.D. 1836 in (blank) County of (blank) State of Ohio.

He lived at time of entry into the service and for a number of years previous in the Village of Mutual Champaign County Ohio.

He first entered the service the 2nd day of May 1864 from Compy H, Reg’t Ohio Na’t Guard for a period of 100 days, and was mustered out of the service as a private the 31st day of August 1864 by reason of expiration of term of enlistment.

He did duty with the regiment at the front, between Richmond and Petersburgh, Va. on the James and Appamattox Rivers. After returning home, he engaged in farming and in the lumber trade, until he was taken fatally sick, and during his sickness he requested that the Post bury him after his death.

The Post turned out and buried him with the honors of the order, his death occurred the 24 day of October, 1889.

Resolutions on death of Comd N. Adams

As a relief from long and severe suffering, death has taken from among us our comrade Nathan Adams, late of Compy E, 134th Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inftry, and in memory of comrade Adams, and in honor of the services rendered by him to his country in her hour of need and distress, it be

Resolved by W.A. Brand Post No.Dept of Ohio, that its Alter, and Charter be draped with the usual emblems of mourning for a period of 30 days.

Comrade William S. Aukerman

Who was born the 11th day of May A.D. 1839 in Congress. County of Wayne. State of Ohio and first entered the service the 13th day of September 1861 for 3 years or during the war from [Candan], Wayne Co. Ohio in Compy K, 16th Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf.-going into camp at Camp Chase Columbus, O. Was promoted to Corporal and to a sargency the 3rd day of February 1862 and was mustered out of the service as such the 31st day of October 1864 at Camp Chase, Columbus, O by reason of expiration of term of enlistment.

The first engagement in which he participated was battle of Tazewell, Tenn, August 6, 1862 at which they supported a battery for a short time, he says an onlooker would have tho’t the regiment was entirely annihaled, as every time a shell would go over their heads they would drop down but they got up again. Their loss was 3 killed 10 wounded and 100 prisoners. Was followed by engagements at Chicksaw Bayon, Miss. Dec. 28 to 29, ’62, Red House, Kanawha Valley, Thompsons Hill, May 1, 1863. Champion Hill, Miss, May 16, ’63, Big Black River, May 17, 1863, Seige of Vicksburgh, Miss. May 18 to July 4, 1863. Jackson, Miss. July 9 to 16, ’63.

Was wounded in seige of Vicksburg, Miss by a shell but was never confined in hospital from hurt or sickness, and was never a prisoner.

Com’d Aukerman names associates with whom he was quite intimate as being Comd Jas. McFadden, Cyrus Ewing, and Jno. Phillips.

The engagement at Chicksaw Bluff, Miss. was one of the important events in his military experience when Co. K. lost 10 killed 17 wounded and 27 wounded and taken prisoners and the regiment lost porportionately he says so crippling then they could not reinlist as a regiment and they did not Veteranize.

Comrade John H. Ayres, M.D.

He first entered the service as an Assistant Surgeon and was assigned to the 34th Regiment Ohio Vol. Inf. The 16th day of Jan’y 1862, and was promoted to Surgeon the 30th day of July 1862. Serving with his regiment until the 22nd of Feb’y 1865 when he was mustered out of service at Cumberland Md. By reason of explanation of term of enlistment. Did not re-enlist again and serve with the army of West Va. During his entire term of service. The first engagement in which he was a participant was at the battle of Princeton, We. Va., May 15 to 18, 1862; and was followed by engagement at Fayetteville, W. Va., Sept. 10, 1862; Charleston W. Va., Sept. 12, 1862; [Wythiville] W. Va., July 18, 1863. Winchester Va. July 20 to 24, 1864, Lynchburgh Va., June 17 & 18, 1864, Fishers Hill, Va., Sept. 22, 1864, [???ar] Creek, Va. October 19, 1864; Beverly, Va., Jany 11, 1865. These are but few of the engagements then being about 25 in all.

Among the intimate associates in the service he names comrades Gen’l A. Saunders Piatt, Gen R.B. Hays, Gen. Guy Coats, Col. Tolond, Col. Franklin, Col. Shaw, Col. Farney, Col. Chas. Boyd, Dr. Cowen, Dr, Chas Miller, and Dr. J.P. Schilling.

We certify that Comrade J.H. Ayres Joined W.A. Brand Post No. 98 Department of Ohio July 8th, 1881 Held offices of and was a charter member of the post.

Resolutions of respect on death of Comrades, A.C. Duel, J.H. Ayers, W.H. Hamilton, and J.D. Wilson

At regular meeting of W.A. Brand Post No. 98 . G.A.R. Dept of Ohio, held in Postroom March 17, 1898, it committee of 3 comrades was appointed to draft suitable resolution on the death of comrades Duel, Ayers, Hamilton, and Wilson.

The committee consisted of comrades E.E. Mast, J.P. Neer and Post Adjutant, J.M. Maitland.

Whereas: It has pleased the Great Architect of the Universe to remove from our midst our late comrades Duel, Ayers, Hamilton and Wilson, and

Whereas:- It is but fitting that their many soldierly traits should be had therefore be it

Resolved:- That while we bow with humble submission to the will of the Most High, we do not the less mourn the loss of our comrades who have been taken from us.

Resolved:- That in the death of comrades Duel, Ayers, Hamilton, and Wilson, this Post lamuets the loss of brave comrades, and we feel that their families have sustained a loss that can never be filled: our country deprived of citizens who rendered invaluable services in the time of her peril; and who have been true and loyal in civil life as private citizens: or in public trust where much has been confered upon them.

Resolved:-that the heartfelt sympathy of this post be extended to the families of these deceased soldiers in their affliction, and that tese resolutions be spread upon the records of the Post.

Comrade Lemuel M. Ayres

Who was born the 11th day of June A.D. 1837, in Union Twp. County of Champaign, State of Ohio.

He first entered the service the 11th day of October, 1861 at Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio as a private soldier, in Company A, Captain Chas. E. Fulton, 66th Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf.. Was promoted to an [act] corporatey, Janu 2, 1864; [do] Seargeant, Jany 10, 1864; [d.] Adjutant August 1, 1864; Acting Surgeon July 8, 1864. Was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. The 27th day of June 1863 to the 10th Reg’t.

Was mustered out of the service the 18th day of October 1864 at Baltimore Md. By reason of expiration of term of enlistment. The first battle in which he was engaged was at Gettysburg, Pa. July 1 to 3, 1863; The second engagement was at Monocacy Creek July 9, 1864 in fight between a portion of the 10 Reg’t V.R.C. and a portion of the rebel Gen’l Marby Cavalry. Was wounded in the draft Riots in New Y. City in July 1863 and at [Morioracy] Creek 9th July 1863. Was confined in hospital in month of May 1862 at Alexander, Va.; at Washington D.C. in Sept. 1862; at Wards Island, N.Y. and at Fort [Schiuyler], N.Y. after leaving Washington D.C. was never captured as a prisoner of war. Among the intimate associates in the service he names Comrades Jno. T. Mitchell; Wm. McClellan, R.N. [Rannells], Jno W. Dempsy and Wm. E. Brunkerhoff of Compy B, 10 Reg’t V.R.C.

Among the importants events connected with Comrade Ayres military expression he says-" My hospital experience; My experience at the battle of Gettysburg July 1 to3rd, 1863 and incidents connected with my serving as special [Agust] for Gen. Jno A. dix" and incidents in worthy of special mention. And again he says-: "I am probably the only soldier of the late war that served in as many positions with only the rank of private. Was detailed and served as Corporal, Seargant, Port Adjutant, Apothican & Druggist, Hospital steward, Surgeon, Commissary of rebel prisoners and special Agt. For Genl Jno A. Dix. Was in 27 states and 3 of the Canadian Provinces and served as paymasters clerk. My most important and enjoyable work was watching the rebels in Canada while under the orders of Gen. Jno A. Dix."

Comrade Amos Baker

Who was born the (blank) day of (blank) A.D. 1825 in (blank) County of Champaign State of Ohio.

He first entered the service the 2nd day of May 1864 form the 4th Reg’t Ohio Nat. Guards. Joining the 134th Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf. Compy I, Cap’t Riker, was appointed a corporal in the compy at its organization. He was mustered out with the compy the 31st day of August 1864 by reason of expiration of term of service, 100 days.

He was a carpenter by trade, of a great disposition and a favorite among many of his comrades as [evenced] by the large concourse following his remains to their final resting place. He died the 3rd day of Sep’t. 1891 and was buried at Oak Dale cemetry Urbana, Ohio with the honors of the order of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Comrade Sampson Barbee

Who was born the 23rd day of June A.D. 1812 in Brentsville County Of Prince William State of Va.

He first entered the service the 30 day of December, 1863 in Comp’y E. Capt Merrideth 70th Ind. Vol. Inf. Col. Benjamin Harrison for the term of 3 years.

Was mustered out of service at Parkersburgh, West Va. the 7th day of June 1865, by reason of Close of the War. The first engagement in which he participated was the battle of Resaca, Ga. May 13 to 16, 1864; followed by service in the battles of Burnt Hickory, Ga. Kenesaw Mt., Ga. Jany 9 to 30, 1864; Peach Tree Creek, Ga. July 20, 1864; Com’d Barbee was in the hospital most of the time from the battle of Peach Tree Creek. Was ward-master in hospital near Atlanta, Ga. and the [worried] men bro’t into the hospital from the battle fields was horrifying to see. He names as some of his intimate associates in the service Capt Wm. M. Merridith, Geo.[Getten], Wm. Cooper, Mathias Stuck, Sam’l Hardin, Robb Davis and Thos. Davis. 

He was injured by a mule in the service by having both his wrists broke white near Stevenson, Ala. He was given a furlough in October to return to his home at Indianapolis, Ind. from the hospital. With the furlough he formed he was out of money and did not want to undertake the trip, andGuy Harrison, he says gave him five dollars from his pocket and he started north getting strong without spending quite 2.00$.. He started to return to his regiment after the elections in 1864, but was shifted about from our hospital to another reaching Parkersburgh, W. Va. Where he remained until he was mustered out.. Com’d Barbee says he was never captured and never a prisoner except in the Guard House as a matter of accord.

Comrade Philander R. Barger

Who was born the 22 day of January A.D. 1835 in (blank) County of Champaign. State of Ohio and first entered the service the 21st day of Oct. 1861 as a private in Compy G. Cap’t Riker 66 Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf. going into camp at Camp McArthur near Urbana, Ohio.

The first battle in which he participated was Port Republic, Va. June 9, ’62. In hospital at Fredrick, Va. from which place he was transferred to Philadelphia, Penna when he remained until he was finally discharge Jany 28, 1863 by reason of Surgeons certificate of disability.

We certify that Comrade P.R. Barger Joined W.A. Brand Post No. 98 Department of Ohio 16 day of May, 1889.

Comrade William Smith Bill

Who was born the 25 day of October A.D., 1848, in Urbana, County of Champaign, State Of Ohio.

He first entered the service as a private soldier the 2nd day of May, 1864, at Urbana, Ohio in Compy A, Cap’t Weaver, 134 Regiment Ohio Vol. Inf. Going into camp at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio and was formally mustered into the United States service the 6th of May, 1864. Was mustered out of the service the 31st day of August, 1864. At Camp Chase, O by reason of expiration of term of enlistment (100 days). Was in 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division 10th Army Corps. And Smiths Division 18th Army Corps.. His regiment was ordered from Camp Chase, O. to Cumberland, Md. By way of Parkersburgh, W. Va on the 7th day of May, when he remained about 4 weeks drilling and doing fatigue in camp, when on the 6th day of June the regiment was ordered to Washington D.C. Reaching Washington City, received orders to proceed at once to White House, Va. Embarking on steamers proceeded at once down the Potomac River into Chesapeake Bay and up the James River to City Point. From time of arrival at City Point the regiment saw active and orderous duty in almost all kinds of Military service on the front and in the enemys territory. [??ding] inpontooning the James River; building roads; rifle pits; fortifications of various kinds. On 17th june was attacked by the enemy on picket duty and driven back from the advanced position taken by us during the night; in this attack his company lost one killed and on mortally wounded who died afterwards in hospital at Fortress Monroe, Va. He names as some of his intimate associates in the service as being Comrades Thomas Stover, Wm. Stewart, D. Hyatt, and J.K. Cheetham and as an event of special interest to him is the fact that he was permitted to take a part in the suppression of the rebellion against the United States being but 15 ½ years of age at the tiome of entering the service.

Comrade Thomas S. Binkard

Who was born the twenty first day of April, A.D> 1843 in Ashland County of (blank) State of Ohio.

Enlisted 10th day of Aug. 1862 from Lorain Co. Ohio was mustered into the service Sept. 9th, 1862 as musician of company G 107 Regt O.V.I. The Regt composed almost entirely of Germans in Sept. they were moved to Covington, Ky. in anticipation of raid there by the rebel Gen. Kirby Smith.

Shortly after was removed to Wasington D.C. where they were engaged in construction of fortifications for protection of the Capitol. In November moved to Fairfax, C.H. thence to Brooks Station. they crossed the Rappahannock and took part in the battle of Chancellorsville, Va. May 3rd, ’63. Returning to Brooks Stn. Remained there until June 12, ’63 when it marched to Gettysburg, Pa. Taxing, part in that battle. Having been wounded at Chancellorsville, May 2nd, ’63 by gunshot in the left leg above the knee; was confined in hospital at Washington D.C. for 5 months where he was transferred to the 2nd Batt. 127th Invalid Regiment in December ’63 and was armed and forwarded to camps for defensive duty during period of threatened raids by the rebels.

He was honorably discharged at Washington March 14, 1863 by reason of Surgeons certificate of Disability

Samuel Clay Bosler

 

Comrade Samuel Clay Bosler, Who was born the 8th day of March A.D. 1839 in Mt. Joy, County of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania.

He first entered the service in Urbana, O as a private soldier in Comp’y C, Cap’t Donn Piatt 13th Reg’t. Ohi Vol. Inf. From West Liberty, Logan County, Oh. Going into camp at Camp Dennison O. Near Cincinnati for the term of 3 months was promoted to a corporacy, and then to a sargency the 6th day of May 1861: and was mustered out of the service the 22nd day of June, 1861, at Columbus O., to enlist, which he did the same day, for the period of three years or during the war, and was assigned to Comp’y D. Cap’t Roberts of the 13th Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf. And went into camp at Camp Dennison. Near Cincinnati, Ohio. He was again mustered out of the [M.G.] service to accept a Commision as 2nd Lieut., Sept. 11, 1862 at Murfreesboro Tenn. He was again promoted tp 1st Lieut. And Reg’t Quartermaster March 8, 1863. In accepting 2nd Lieutenanig he was transferred from Comp’y D to Comp’y E of same Reg’t. He was mustered out of the service finally at Chattanooga Tenn. The 26th day of June 1864 by reason of expiration of term of enlistment. The first engagement in which he participated was the Battle of Carnifax Ferry, W.V. Sept. 10, 1861, and which in the engagement found for the forst time there was about as much danger from the breech end of a gun as from the muzzle end: being armed with the old [U.Z] muskits, the aim from the rear was more direct than the front. The battle of Rittsburgh Landing was next on April 6th & 7th 1862: followed by Perryville Ky, Oct. 8 1862: Murfreesboro, Tenn Dec. 31, 1862 to Jany 1 & 2 1863: Chattanooga, Ga, Sept. 19 & 20 1863: Mission Ridge, Tenn, Nov. 25, 1863: Rocky Face Ridge, Ga. Feby 25 to 27, 1864: Resaca March 13 to 16, 1864; Cassville, Ga. May 19 to 22, 1864. Ricketts Mills, Ga, May 27, 1864 and in all these engagements to they lost men. Was injured in the Battle of Stone River or Murfires Goro. iN ribs, side, and hip; but was never confined to the hospital, and was never captured. He names as some of the intimate associates with him in the service as being Col. D. Jarvis, Cap’t Jno Seibert: Cap’t D. Crawford, yet alive and Henderson McCullough Dec’d; the most important and thrilling event in his military career was leading a charge at Mission Ridge, Ga and placing the colors of his company (E) first on the works of the enemy in that engagement. The official document he has in his possession, as he was at the in command of the company and beaing date Nov. 28, 1863 and signed by Col. Jarvis Comd’y Reg’t ; Gen’l Beatty; Comd’g [Brigride] ; Gen. T.J. Wood Comdg Div. & Gen. Granger, 4th Army Corp, G.W. Bosler justly [?uzis] this document highly.

 

 

Comrade Furgeson Bower

Who was born the (blank) day of (blank) A.D. 1832 in New York City County of (blank) State of New York.

He first entered the service the 2nd day of May 1864 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to Compy E. Capt. W.B. Cheney 134 Regiment Ohio Vol. Inf.; He continued with the Compy until until mustered out of the service the 31st day of August 1864 by reason of expiration of term of service 100 days.

He could not stand the rugged edges of the soldiers life and returned home broken in health from which he never fully recovered.

He lived in the Village of Mutual Champaign Co. O. until his death which occurred the 2nd day of Jany, 1889 and was buried at the little Cemetry west of the Village and in the church yard.

He suffered a long seige of pain from Brights disease.

After long suffering, death has relieved Comrade Furgeson Bowen, of further suffering, and the trials and perplexities of this life, to try the realities of an unknown world, in memory of the virtues, and patriotism possessed by him, be it

Comrade Thomas Talbott Brand

Who was born the 28th day of January A.D., 1835 in Urbana. County Of Champaign. State of Ohio.

He first entered the service the 16th day of April, 1861 and was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and assigned to company "K" of the 2nd Ohio Vol. Inf. Going into camp at Columbus, O. The regiment was ordered to Washington City, D.C. at once and left Columbus on 19 day of April enroute, but was delayed several day on the way. He was mustered into the service with his Co. and regiment at Lancaster, Pa. The 29th day of April, 1861 for 3 months. Comrade Brand resigned the lieutenancy in the 3 months service to accept a 1st Lieutenancy of the 18th Reg’t. U.S. Inf. Army, the 22nd day of June, 1864 which appt. he rec’d the 14th day of May 1861.

Was promoted to Captain Sept. 11, 1863, and was [Briorted] Major U.S. Army 13" day of March 1865 for Gallant and Meritorious conduct in Battle of Stone River, Tenn. Dec. 31, 1863 and at battle of Chickamanga, Ga. Sept. 19 & 20, 1863.

Was retired from active service 31st day of Dec., 1864 for wounds received in line of duty. Was on Mustering and Dispursing duty until 1st day of Dec., 1868.

Was first engaged in siege of Corinth, Miss. Which in command of company A, 3rd Batt’l’n. The second engagement was at Perryville, Ky. Oct. 8, 1862. Stone River or Murfreesboro, Tenn. Dec. 31, 1862 to Jany. 2nd, 1863. Hoovers Gap…………….(blank)………..Battle of Chickamanga, Ga. Sept. 19 & 20, 1863. Was wounded at battle of Chickamanga, Ga. Sept. 19, by minnie ball in left elbow; and was confined in hospital, No. 2- in Nashville, Tenn. because of Sept. and month of October, 1863. Was never taken prisoner.

He names as some of his intimate associates in the service, comrades Col. Shepherd, Majors E.D. Townsend, and I.N. [Cald???], Capt. G.W. Smith, H. Douglass, F.T. Bennett and all the officers of the 18th Reg.t United States Inf.

The most important events in his military experience in the service was while he was chief Mustering and Disbursing officer of the states of Indiana, Ohio, and West Va. in closing up the financial affairs of the Government with there states from 1864 to 1868.

We certify that Comrade T.T. Brand Joined W.A. Brand Post No. 98 Department of Ohio as a charter member July 8th, 1881 Held offices of…He is a brother of Comd W.A. Brand for whom the Post was named.

 

Comrade William Augustus Brand

Who was born the 12th day of July A.D. 1837 in Union Twp. County of Champaign. State of State and first entered the service (blank) day of October 1861 at Urbana, Ohio as a private in Compy G, Captain (blank) going into camp at camp McArthur, near Urbana, Ohio. And was discharged from the service in Month of May 1864 at Washington D.C. to accept commission as Quarter Master and 1st Lieutenant of the 66 Regiment Ohio Vol. Inf. The first battle in which he participated, was the battle of Port Republic, Va. June 9th, 1862; followed by engagements in the battles of Cedar Mt., Va. Fredericksburg, Va. Demfries, Va. Dec 27, 1863; Gettysburg, Pa. July 1 to 3, 1863; Seige of Atlanta, Ga. July 28 to Sept 2nd , 1864; And accompanied Gen. Sherman in his famous march to the Sea, in seige of Savana, Ga. Dec. 1864, and with the army from Savannah to Washington D.C. participating in grand Review. Was confined in Hospital at Frederick City Md. About 4 week in 1862. As intimate associates in the service there are named Comrades Capt T.G. Kellar, Col. Eugene Powell and Surgeon J.W. Brock. The following account has been handed to the Post Hist’n by a friend of Comd Brand. "W.A. Brand was best known during the awar of the rebellion as a faithful newspaper correspondent, under the[Vour]-de Plum of D.N. Arbaw. He wrote graphite letters, weekly, detailing soldiers experiences and giving graphic descriptions of Army movements. His letters were read with intense interest by the people at home, and were highly appreciated by his soldiers associates. Upon his return home at the close of the war he engaged in the News-paper business and employed his best efforts in behalf of the men to whom he believed we [owed] the mentainance of our government. At the time of his death May 17, 1879 he was engaged in writing a history of the war; several chapters of which were published in the Cinti [Court]; and attracted wide spread attention and flattering commendations from [leaching] observers of War movements, notably the Count de-Pairs who declared them the most accurate contributions to war history he had ever read.

Comrade Isaac D. Bridgeman

Who was born the 4th day of May A.D. 1839 in (blank). County of Miami. State of Ohio, and first entered the service the 11th day of August 1862 as a private in Compy H. Cap’t Rhodes 45 Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf. Going into camp at Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio. Was mustered out as a private of same compy and Regt at camp Harker, Tenn. by reason of close of the war.

The first battle in which he was engaged was at Covington, Ky with the Rebel Gen. Kirby Smith forces and followed with engagements at Lexington, Ky Buzzards Roost, Ky Cumberland Gap Knoxville, Tenn. Bulls Gap and others as reported to him, yet historian cannot find them reported to his regiment in the Roster of Ohio Soldiers. He was in the Hospital at Lexington, Ky at Lookout M’tn and at Camp Dennison.

He names as some of his intimate associates in the service comrades Peter Kenton, Jno P. Neer, O.T. Lemon, Sam’l Miller and Le Grand [Hannon].

The important events in his military history and experience was the Morgan Raid through Ohio and Ind. and the Seige of Knoxville, Tenn. Nov 17 to Dec.4,1863.

Comrade Isiah Winfield Buckney

Who was born the 18th day of February A.D. 1837 in Near [Flushing] County of Belmont State of Ohio and first entered the service as a private and was assigned to Company E. of the 55th Mass. Vol. Inft. (Colored) and was shorly afterward promoted to 1st duty seargent. Entered service 29th day of May 1863 receiving the appointment of Seargent at time of organization of Co. Ohio not receiving any colored trops at this time; the patriotism burning in his breast, with a desire for the welfare of his fellow countryman, that they might be free, led him of offer his services to the state of Mass. That he might bear an honorable part in the cause of his country. Going into camp at Readville, Mass. Comrade Buckney was taken down sick with Small Pox Readville in about 2 weeks after going into camp; and was confined to the hospital at Readville until some time in September, when Gen. A.R. Ourse had him detailed to drill recruits at that post, until the month of Dec. when he joined his regiment at Fally Island South Ca. The first engagement in which he participated was at James Island S.C. in the spring of 1864. Leaving Falls Is. He went with his regiment to Jacksonville, Fla. By boat going from Jacksonville to Olusta, Fla. When he was in the battle of Olusta, Fla. Feby 20, 1864. Returning to Jacksonville, embarking on boat, was taken to Palatka when he was with regiment in several engagements with General Finnegans Command returning again to Folly Island in month of April. Being a tall man Comrade Buckney was appointed Color Seargent of the Regiment which he headed until dismissed from service. Was again engaged in battle on July 2nd at James Island at which battle he was wounded in right leg below the knee by gunshot. Gen. A.S. Hartwell complimented him for bravery in action and granted him furlough for 30 days at expiration of which it was extended 30 day. He spent his furlough at home in Urbana, rejoining his reg’t near Savannah, Ga. about first of year 1865. Going from the Fort [Thunderhead], Ga. there to Folly Island, immediately leaving there and going to battle for the third time at James Is. Embarking again near transported to [Rulls] Bay marching through Charlotte S.C. and following Gen. Hardee who was retreating from the city. Twas there he heard of Surrender of Gen. Lee and the assassination of Lincoln as intimate comrades names Corporal Kennedy, Cap’t Warwick, Searg’t Parker & Corporal Geo. D. Jones.

Comrade Isiah Buckney died at Columbus, O Feby 22, 1900 interment at Oak Dale cemetery, Urbana, O

 

Comrade Luke Bryan

Who was born the (blank) day of (blank) A.D. 1829 in Sidney County of Shelby State of Ohio and was a farmer by occupation, and first entered the service as a private in Comp’y B. Cap’t Palmer 66th Reg’t Ohio Vol. Inf. 24th day of Sept. 1861. For a period of 3 years or during the war.

He was wounded at the battle of Cedar M’t’n, Va. Aug. 9th, 1862. He was at battle of Chancellorsville, Va. 3rd day of May 1863.

He was transferred to the 9 Vet. Res. Corps. Compy A. July 1, 1863 and mustered out of the service the 24 day of November 1865 by reason of close of the war.

He was never a strong man and from the close of the service until his death he was a constant suffered from the effects of wounds and exposure.

He died in January 1892 and was buried with honors by the Post in Oak Dale Cemetry, Urbana, O.

Late of Company B. 66th Regt. O.V.I. having answered the last roll-call here below, the Great Commander, summoned him to his heavenly reward, and upon his death, let it be. Resolved:-

By Brand Post no. 98 Dept of O G.A.R. that in recognition to his services to our country, rendered when in dire distress, we order the Alter and Charter of the Post draped with the usual emblems of mourning for a period of thirty days.
